Wedding Cake Wars

Many couples s are trying to find any way to save a buck on their wedding, there are many ways where you can trim your budget. However, there is the correct way to save money and the incorrect way. A couple of places people seen to try and save money is with the cake. Everyone knows someone who likes to “bake” but, does that person have the right type of ovens to bake large cakes in and do they know that there needs to be support dowels inside the cake? Then can they put the cake together at the facility and do they have a refrigerated truck to transport the cake with? These would be some of concerns I would have with having a non-professional make the cake.

Being a wedding planner I personally have repaired many cakes and EVERY TIME it has been a cake made by a friend or family member. I have seen cakes arrive melted because the people driving were getting cold in the car from the AC being on high. I have seen cakes fall because they don’t have the dowels in them. I have also seen people eat these cakes and spit them out because the baker got the ingredients wrong.

So instead of using a friend who likes to bake got to the professionals. Yet, here are some tips on how you can save money even using a professionally made cake.

  1. You do not need a piece of cake for every guest. I send home so so so much cake because the bakeries will of course ask you how many people you are having you say 100 and they will charge you for 100 slices of cake. Many people will not eat cake or don’t like cake. This is why other options or additions to the dessert can be a fun and cost savaing way to make sure everyone gets a treat.
  2. Do you plan to really keep your cake top? Answer is typically no so instead of wasting that part of  the cake go ahead and cut it! Many bakeries now will make you a new top layer for your 1st Anniversary.
  3. Yet you want that big multi layer cake you have always dreamed of. The secret… styrofoam. Bakers can make faux layers with styrofoam so you have this large impressive cake for less.
